Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Katzarov’s Manual on Industrial Property (1924-2024)
One hundred years ago, in 1924, Professor Konstantin Katzarov launched a groundbreaking guide, “Katzaroff’s Patent Directory,” which provided patent and trademark practitioners worldwide with an indispensable resource. From its early days as a printed book with a handful of sections to a global online guide covering over 200 countries, Katzarov’s Manual has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of industrial property protection. Today, edited by KATZAROV SA, the Manual is updated daily by a skilled team and 140+ international IP contributors, ensuring it remains an essential daily tool for IP practitioners worldwide, just as Professor Katzarov envisioned a century ago.
And so, in the magical year of 1924, Professor Konstantin Katzarov — a wise and dedicated Chartered Patent Agent and Attorney at Law — brought forth the very first “Katzaroff’s Patent Directory.”
It was the first of its kind, the first practical tool for patent and trademark practitioners, a true marvel in the realm of invention.
In its precious pages, Professor Katzarov crafted two enchanted sections:
- I) general statistical data; and
- II) the addresses of all patent attorneys and agents worldwide, actively engaged in patent practice.
Thus, a timeless journey began, led by this humble yet magical Directory.
As news of the wondrous Patent Directory spread, letters from distant lands praised its wisdom and usefulness, warming Professor Katzarov’s heart. Inspired by this admiration, he devoted two whole years to expanding and refining his creation, crafting an even grander edition in 1926.
This enchanted volume contained not two but five sections:
- I) general statistical data;
- II) general remarks;
- III) industrial property legislation;
- IV) requirements and formalities for obtaining patents, trademarks, designs and models; and
- V) a list of all practicing patent attorneys and agents worldwide.
Thus, the Directory grew into a richer, more wondrous tool, a beacon for all who sought to guard the innovations.
As the years passed, the fame of Katzaroff’s Patent Directory spread like whispers of magic across kingdoms far and wide. Letters arrived from distant lands, filled with tales of gratitude and marvel. Some called the Directory “extremely useful,” others shared that “it is in use every day in the office“. These words of praise inspired Professor Katzarov to expand his creation further.
For the grand 1931 edition, he summoned trusted patent attorneys and agents from 58 different countries. Each responsible for his own country, ensuring that the Directory’s pages held the latest, most accurate information. With their help, the Directory grew even mightier, a trove of wisdom that Professor Katzarov hoped “should constantly be on the desk of every practicing colleague“, and that “it should be in daily use by every colleague“.
And so, the enchanted Directory continued its journey, spreading light and guidance to all who sought to shield the creations in the magical world of invention.
And so, in the present day, the magic of Katzarov’s Manual on Industrial Property lives on, stronger and more far-reaching than ever before.
For many years, the Manual’s enchanted pages were printed each year, sharing their wisdom with the world.
From 1997, they even appeared on gleaming CD-ROMs, a new kind of vessel to carry their knowledge.
Then, in 2011, the Manual took its greatest leap yet, transforming into a magical online portal.
By 2016, the printed volumes had become cherished relics, while the online Manual brought new wisdom with the swiftness of a breeze.
Now, this legendary guide spans all corners of the world, protecting ideas across more then 200 countries.
It safeguards all forms of industrial property rights, e.g. patents of invention, utility models, industrial designs, trade and service marks, geographical indications, and topographies. There are also chapters on new plant varieties, domain names, copyright and trade secrets.
