GENERAL REMARKS
Tajikistan used to be a part of the former Soviet Union. The republic declared its independence on September 9, 1991. The Patent Office of Tajikistan (National Center for Patents and Information) was established in August 1993.

Validity: issued after a formal and full examination – valid for 20 years.

FILING REQUIREMENTS
- Power of Attorney, no legalization (if the application is filed through a local agent);
- Prints of the sign to be protected (5 prints 8 x 8 cm);
- List of goods and services, according to the International Classification; one application may include goods belonging to more than one International Class (to be translated into Tajik (Farsi) or Russian);
- Priority document, if any (to be filed within three months from the filing date).
REMARKS
Kinds of protection: trademarks and service marks (word marks, device marks and combinations thereof, 3-dimensional marks, sound and light marks). Besides the original version, filing of word mark applications in the Cyrillic alphabet is highly recommended, as the Tajik language uses the Cyrillic alphabet, and Russian still being a parallel language in this country.
Classification: International.
Obligation to use the registered mark: compulsory. A trademark, which is not used during any three-year period after the registration date (or the last date of use), may be cancelled upon request filed by an interested party.
Duration – renewals: 10-year period after the filing date or last renewal date.
Opposition: applications are published in the Official Gazette after the formal examination for opposition.

Duration: after formal and novelty examination: 10 years from the filing date. Extension: additional period of 5 years.

DOMAIN NAMES
LEGAL BASIS
- There is no specific legislation although some regulations on the organization and management of country code top-level domain names do exist. Furthermore, the Government of Tajikistan has promulgated a decree on the “Rules of Rendering Internet Services in the Territory of the Republic of Tajikistan”.
